A Beginner's Guide to Surfing in Canggu

3 min read

Everything you need to know about surfing in Canggu. Best breaks for beginners, lesson prices, board rentals, and etiquette by RENT Property Management.

Canggu is one of the world's most accessible surf destinations. Whether you've never touched a board or you're looking to progress from whitewash to green waves, this guide covers everything you need to know.

The Breaks

Batu Bolong (Old Man's)

The gentle giant of Canggu's surf scene. A long, forgiving wave that breaks over sand, perfect for beginners and longboarders. The crowd can be intense during peak hours (7–9am and 4–6pm), but the wave is so long that there's usually room for everyone.

Best for: Complete beginners, longboarding, mellow sessions Board: Foam board or longboard Tide: All tides, best at mid-tide

Berawa

A step up from Batu Bolong. Slightly faster, slightly more powerful, and less crowded. The beach break offers multiple peaks, so there's often an empty section to practice on. Good for progressing from beginner to intermediate.

Best for: Progressing beginners, intermediate surfers Board: Funboard or longboard Tide: Mid to high tide

Echo Beach

The real deal. A reef break with powerful, hollow waves that will humble you if you're not ready. Not for beginners — the reef is sharp and the current can be strong. But watching from the beach with a cold drink is entertainment enough.

Best for: Intermediate to advanced surfers Board: Shortboard or performance funboard Tide: Mid to high tide only

Pererenan

A less-known reef break north of Echo Beach. Can produce beautiful long lefts on the right swell. Less crowded than the main breaks but requires more experience and local knowledge.

Best for: Intermediate to advanced Board: Shortboard Tide: Mid tide

Taking Lessons

Group lessons at Batu Bolong run around IDR 400,000–600,000 (5–7 USD) for two hours including board rental. Private lessons cost IDR 700,000–1,000,000 (4–2 USD). Most schools include rash guards, reef booties, and water.

Look for instructors with ISA (International Surfing Association) certification. They understand ocean safety, progressive teaching methods, and how to keep you having fun while learning.

Board Rentals

Boards are available on every beach for IDR 50,000–100,000/hour (– USD). For daily rentals, several shops in Batu Bolong rent quality foam boards and longboards for IDR 100,000–150,000/day.

If you're staying longer than a week, consider buying a used foam board from one of the surf shops — you can sell it back when you leave.

Surf Etiquette

The lineup has unwritten rules that keep everyone safe:

  1. The surfer closest to the peak has priority — don't drop in on someone already riding
  2. Paddling out: go around the break, not through it
  3. Hold your board: never let go of your board in crowded lineups
  4. Be aware: look before you take off, check both directions
  5. Respect locals: they surf here every day, you're a guest

After Your Session

Canggu's post-surf ritual is half the experience. BGS Surf Supply serves excellent coffee steps from Echo Beach. Deus Ex Machina in Batu Bolong has the iconic post-surf vibe — cold drinks, good food, motorcycle culture. Or head back to your villa pool for the ultimate cool-down.
